The Flehmen response

"It's very interesting, herd behaviour that is, and taking a moment to watch its social going ons can tell you quite a lot. I took a moment today to watch this herd, the bull was extremely attentive and dutifully groomed and moved about the herd. I managed to get a good shot of a behaviour seen in many male mammals and it's called the Flehmen response. The Flehmen response is the term given to the action of the animal raising/curling up its upper lip to detect scent and pheromones in particular those produced by female counterparts. This action allows scents and pheromones to be processed which will give the male information about the 'breeding status' of the female animal/s."
